European Buyers Foshan Tile Sourcing Guide
Foshan is China's largest tile production base, with a wide range of styles and highly competitive prices. But for European buyers, the standards and requirements are different. Based on my years of hands-on experience exporting to Europe, I written this guide specifically on what to look out for when sourcing tiles from Foshan.
1. Check the Documents
Many Foshan factories produce excellent tiles at reasonable prices, but they may be manufactured primarily to meet Chinese market requirements, not European ones. If the products are intended for the European market, industry certifications are the most basic requirement.
CE Marking and DoP
For tiles that fall under the relevant European construction product regulations, the CE marking is a key item to verify. The factory must also be able to provide a DoP (Declaration of Performance). This document lists fire performance, water absorption, breaking strength, and other relevant indicators. If the factory cannot provide a DoP, my usual advice is to skip them.
EN 14411
EN 14411 is an important European product standard for ceramic tiles, covering classification, performance, and testing requirements. Don't just feel reassured by seeing 'EN 14411' printed somewhere. More importantly, confirm that the test report the factory provides is actually for the specific product you are going to purchase.
2. How to Judge Tile Quality
When inspecting the actual products at a showroom, you can identify quality issues through these details.
Touch the surface
Run your hand over it. A good glaze should be smooth and fine. If it feels rough, or you can see obvious bubbles, pinholes, cracks, or other defects, the quality is not good.
Water drop test
Put a few drops of water on the back of the tile and wait a few minutes. Observe how the water spreads and absorbs. If the water droplets remain intact and do not spread, it means low water absorption and high density.
Flatness test
Take two tiles from the same batch and press their faces together. A slight gap is normal, but if the gap is too large or there is visible curvature, the tiles will definitely be uneven when laid on the floor.
Stain and wear resistance test
Draw a line on the tile surface with a marker pen and wait 5 minutes before wiping it off. If it doesn't come off cleanly, the stain resistance is poor. Scratch it lightly with a key. If it leaves a mark easily, the durability is not up to standard.
3. Pre-Shipment Inspection
Color code and production date
The most common problem in sourcing is seeing an A-grade sample but receiving mixed-grade goods. During inspection, you must require that the entire batch maintains the same color code and the same production date. Mixing different batches results in uneven shades when installed.
Arrange on-site inspection
Don't just trust photos taken by the factory. Photos are heavily affected by sunlight and lighting, which can seriously interfere with your judgment. If you cannot come to Foshan in person, make sure to appoint a third-party inspection agency to do on-site sampling at the factory before loading.
4. Which Size Is the Best ?
Don't blindly chase oversized formats, and don't assume that smaller sizes are always cheaper. Common sizes in the European market currently include 600×600mm, 800×800mm, and 600×1200mm.
600×600mm is suitable for ordinary residential projects and cost-sensitive projects. 800×800mm is better for mid-to-high-end residential. 600×1200mm is more suitable for modern residential and commercial spaces, with fewer grout lines and a better overall effect.
750×1500mm or larger formats do have more visual impact, but they also place higher demands on packaging, handling, and installation.
So when sourcing from Foshan, in addition to the price per square meter, you also need to factor in container loading quantity, transport damage, and installation costs.
