LCL vs FCL: How to Choose When Shipping from China?

Most buyers think: “Less cargo, go LCL; more cargo, go FCL.”

That’s not wrong, but it’s not the whole picture.

Based on bamboo sourcing team years of experience in foreign trade, We’ve clarified some of the details in between and written them below.

What’s the Difference?

LCL (Less than Container Load): Your goods share a container with cargo from other customers. Freight is generally calculated based on the volume your goods occupy, usually measured in cubic meters (CBM).

FCL (Full Container Load): You use an entire container exclusively. Regardless of how much cargo is loaded inside, you pay the agreed freight rate for the container.

As a general reference, a 20ft container can hold around 28 CBM, while a 40ft high cube container can hold around 68 CBM. Actual usable capacity depends on the type of goods, packaging and how they are loaded.

Bamboo sourcing's Reminders

1. LCL Usually Takes Longer Than FCL

LCL transit can take longer because your cargo needs to be delivered to a consolidation warehouse, sorted and combined with other shipments before the container is loaded.

Depending on the suppliers, locations and freight forwarder, collecting cargo from different factories and delivering everything to the warehouse can take around 7–10 days.

With FCL, the shipping schedule is usually more straightforward, with a confirmed ETD and ETA once the booking is made.

2. Always Check What Is Included in the LCL Quote

When choosing an LCL service, confirm with your freight forwarder whether the quoted rate is door-to-door and all-inclusive, and ask specifically about possible additional charges.

Some quotes may look cheap at first, but after the goods arrive at the destination port, you may be asked to pay additional charges such as:

  • Documentation fees
  • Destination terminal handling charges
  • Destination warehouse fees
  • Storage fees
  • Other destination charges

Always ask for a clear breakdown before you confirm the shipment.

Common Shipping Situations and bamboo sourcing's solution

1. Consolidation Service

If you purchase small batches from different factories in Foshan, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, consolidation can be more important than simply deciding between LCL and FCL.

For example, if three suppliers ship independently, you may end up with:

  • Three separate pickups
  • Three sets of shipping documents
  • Three separate cargo shipments
  • Additional handling and transportation costs

A better approach is to have all suppliers deliver their goods to a unified transit warehouse, where the cargo can be inspected, combined and consolidated before being loaded into the same container.

This is also where a local sourcing service provider can add value.

We can help coordinate suppliers, arrange delivery schedules, organize consolidation and follow up on the shipment, so the entire process is easier to manage.

If you currently have goods purchased from different suppliers that need to be consolidated, send us the specific information and we can help arrange it.

2. AB Document Risk: Sometimes FCL Can Be the Safer Option

This situation can become complicated when you purchase goods from multiple suppliers and they use different export documentation arrangements.

For example, some suppliers may formally declare exports and handle export tax rebates (Type A suppliers), while others may use a different customs declaration arrangement and do not handle tax rebates (Type B suppliers).

If you want to consolidate Type A and Type B goods into the same LCL shipment, additional customs and documentation risks may arise.

Increased Inspection Risk

Goods involved in export tax rebates may be subject to closer customs supervision.

If one Type A supplier’s goods in an LCL container are selected for inspection, the entire container may be delayed while the relevant cargo is checked.

In this situation, there are two practical ways to manage the risk:

Option 1: Book an FCL

Even if the container is not completely full, you can load the goods into a dedicated container.

This gives you greater control over the customs declaration and shipping process and reduces the risk of delays caused by unrelated cargo belonging to other customers.

Option 2: Work with an Experienced Freight Forwarder

Find a freight forwarder familiar with this type of shipment and ask them to separate Type A and Type B goods and manage the documentation and customs process accordingly.

However, not every freight forwarder has experience handling this kind of arrangement.

If you mix Type A and Type B goods in an ordinary LCL shipment without confirming the documentation and customs arrangements in advance, you should be prepared for the possibility of delays.
